On 6th of August I had a wonderful experience with the pre-primary school teachers.

I spent a lot time with them. first i visited them to Manav Sadhna community center and make understan them about our projects and connect them with our little children also.

after that i was taken them to women's center show them our Bholu Aanganvadi.

I had really amazing interaction with those teachers. I shared about personal caring and saving account. because most of them women have no personal saving account.I was trying to explain that how much important to have our own saving account and gave them example of rage pikers ladies who are saving every day not too much but start with 5 rupees or 10 rupees per day.

for me it was an amazing sharing.

વાત વાતમાં: ૫ થી ૭ ધોરણ ના બાળકોને પરીક્ષા હોવાથી માત્ર ૮ થી ૧૦ ધોરણના બાળકોને ફિલ્મ બતાવી હતી.

પછી બાળકોને બે ગ્રુપમાં વહેંચીને બે વિષય આપ્યા ચર્ચા કરવા માટે ગોળમાં બેસાડ્યા.તેમની ચર્ચા દરમ્યાન એવું લાગતું હતું કે તે લોકો એકબીજાથી જીતવા માટે વિચારીને મુદ્દા કહેતા હતા અને તેમાં સારી વસ્તુ એ હતી કે દરેકે દરેક બાળકે તેમાં ભાગ લીધો હતો અને તેમના વિચારોને કહેતી વખતે શરમાતા નહોતા પણ આત્મવિશ્વાસથી કહેતા હતા.

૧) ગ્રુપ : જો તે લોકોને ક્લાસ ભણાવવા માટે આપવામાં આવે તો ભણાવવા માટે શું શું કરો ?

૨) ગ્રુપ : જો આ ટ્યુશન ક્લાસ ના હોય તો તમને શું થાય / ફર્ક પડે?

બાળકોએ ખુબ ઉત્શાહ થી ચર્ચા કરી હતી.પહેલા ગ્રુપમાંથી જવાબ આવ્યા કે અમે બાળકો માટે વ્યાયામનો ક્લાસ રાખીએ,કોમ્પ્યુટર શીખવાડીએ,રમત રમાડવા માટે મેદાનમાં લઇ જઈએ વગેરે.

બીજા ગ્રુપના બાળકોએ કહ્યું કે આ ક્લાસ બંધ થઇ જાય તો અમે સારી અને નવી વાત /વસ્તુઓ શીખી ના શકીએ જેમકે સફાઈની વાત ,વડીલોને માન આપવું,ગાળો નહિ બોલવી,લીડર બનવાનું, સારા માણસ બનવાનું વગેરે.

સમયના અભાવ ને લીધે ચર્ચા ને અધુરી છોડી છે અને ઘરેથી વધારે વિચારી લાવવા માટે કહ્યું છે.હવે પછીના ફિલ્મ સ્ક્રીનીન્ગમાં આપણે આ વાતોને વધારે ઊંડાણ પૂર્વક સમજાવવાનો પ્રયત્ન કરીશ.

વાત વાતમાં: કીશોરીયોને સફાઈ શોલેના બે દ્રશ્યો બતાવીને સફાઈ વિષે વાત કરી હતી.આજનો ક્લાસ ખુબ સંવેદનશીલ હતો કેમકે આજે તે લોકો સાથે અંગત સફાઈ તથા શારીરિક અંગત સફાઈ વિષે વાત કરી હતી અને સમજાવ્યું કે અંગો પ્રત્યેની બેદરકારી ખુબ ગંભીર પરિણામો લાવે છે.કિશોરીઓએ તેમને થતી તકલીફો વિષે પણ વાત કરી હતી.

આશરે ૨૫ વર્ષના કવિતાબેન મનોજભાઈ મારવાડીને ૩ બાળકો છે અને તેમને છેલ્લા એક વર્ષથી સ્તનમાં ગાંઠ છે,આંગણવાડી કાર્યકર બહેનના સમજાવવા છતાં તે બહેન માન્યા નહિ અને હવે તેમને ખુબ જ દુખાવો થાય છે એટલે આપણી મદદ માંગે છે.તેમના પતિ પણ માનતા નથી.એટલે આપણાં કાર્યકર બહેનો સતત તેમને સમજાવતા રહે છે.

બીજા એક ૨૨ વર્ષના બહેનના પતિ ખુબ જ દારૂ પીવે છે અને તે બહેન ઈચ્છે છે કે તેમના પતિ દારૂ કોઈ પણ રીતે છોડી દે પણ કેવી રીતે તે ખબર નહોતી એટલે આપણે તેમને વાત કરી કે ડૉ. ની સલાહ પ્રમાણે દવા આપવામાં આવે તો દારૂ છોડાવી શકાય છે.પણ તેમના સાસુ માનતા નથી એટલે આવતા સ્ક્રીનીંગમાં તેમને લઈને આવશે અને આપણે તેમને માહિતી આપીને સમજાવવાનો પ્રયત્ન કરીશું અને જો શક્ય થશે તો તેમના પતિ સાથે પણ આપણે વાત કરીશું.

બધાએ સાથે મળીને સંગીત ખુરશી રમત રમી હતી અને છેલ્લે બધા ગોળમાં ઉભા રહીને એકબીજાના હાથ પકડીને positive શક્તિનું આદાન પ્રદાન કર્યું.

આજે ૨૫ કિશોરીએ ફિલ્મ સ્ક્રીનીંગમાં ભાગ લીધો હતો .

કિશોરીઓની ૫ ટીમ પાડીને સફાઈ વિદ્યાલયમાંથી યુનિસેફની ૫ પુસ્તકો આપીને લીડરને કહ્યું છે કે તે પુસ્તકમાં જે માહિતી છે તેનાથી પોતાની ટીમના દરેક સદસ્યને માહિતગાર કરે અને ઘરે ના ફાવે તો આપણાં સેન્ટર પર આવીને વાંચે.

સાંજે કાર્ડ પ્રોજેક્ટના બાળકોને સફાઈનો સનેડો ફિલ્મ બતાવી અને સમજાવ્યું કે આપણે રોજે માનવ સાધનામાં આવીએ છીએ એટલે આપણે જાણીએ છીએ સફાઈની વાતો પણ હવેથી તેની આદતો બનાવવાની છે.

Last Saturday i screened a film of safai no sanedo.After showing the film i talked with those women about sanitation and personal hygiene.During the discussion, I explained that when you behave in a more hygienic way make sure you have explained to your children why hygiene and sanitation is important for us. Because when children understand the important of these things then they will do it with theirheart.

i observed those women and i felt it that we can't teach them,we just suggested them the solutions and gavethem information about hygiene and sanitation and someother things.

વાત વાતમાં:આજે ત્રણેય વર્ગના બાળકોને વારાફરતી ફિલ્મ બતાવી.દરેક વર્ગને ૩૦ ઇનીત આપી હતી.૫ થી ૭ ધોરણ ના બાળકોની સાથે સારી આદતો ની અસરો કેવી હોય છે તે વિષે વાત કરી.તે લોકોને સરળ ભાષામાં પૂછ્યું કે આપણને આંબો અને બાવળ બે માંથી એક ની પસંદગી કરવાની હોય તો શેની પસંદગી કરીએ? તો દરેકે દરેક બાળકે કહ્યું કે અમે તો આંબાને જ પસંદ કરીએ.આંબો પસંદ કરવાનું કારણ બધાયે કહ્યું એટલે આગળ વાત ચલાવતા કહ્યું કે જેમ આંબાની સારી વસ્તુઓ જેમ કે ફળ,છાંયો આપણ ને ગમે છે તેમ જયારે આપણે સારી આદતો કેળવીએ છીએ ત્યારે આપણે સારા વ્યક્તિ બની શકીએ છીએ.

૮ થી ૧૦ ધોરણ ના બાળકો સાથે પણ સારી આદતો વિષે ચર્ચા કરી. ગયા અઠવાડિયામાં આ બાળકોએ પક્ષી બચાવો અભિયાન માં ભાગ લીધો હતો તે વિષે તેમના અનુભવો ની વાતો કરી.બાળકો ચાલીઓમાં જઈને બધાને સમજાવતા હતા અને ચોપાનીયા વહેંચતા હતા.તે લોકોએ કહ્યું કે ઘણા લોકો તો અમને ગાળો આપતા હતા કે આવા ગતકડા શું કામ કરો છો જયારે ઘણા લોકો તો ચોપાનીયા પણ હાથમાં નહોતા લેતા અને તેનું કારણ અંધ શ્રધા હતી કેમકે તે લોકોને આવું લાગતું હતું કે ચોપાનીયા લિયે તો પછી તેમણે પોતાને પણ એવા છપાવીને વહેંચવા પડશે.પણ બાળકોએ ખુબ ઉત્સાહથી કામ કર્યું અને reporting પણ કર્યું જેને લીધે તે લોકોના આત્મ વિશ્વાસમાં ઘણો ઉમેરો થયો છે.

વાત વાતમાં : આજે DVD player ના હોવાથી laptop પર ફિલ્મ બતાવી હતી અને તેથી જ માત્ર એક જ ક્લાસ ના બાળકોને ફિલ્મ બતાવી શકાઈ.

એ ફિલ્મમાં ગુટકા,તમાકુ ખાવાથી શું થાય છે તેની માહિતી હતી.તે વિષે બાળકો સાથે ચર્ચા કરી અને સમજાવ્યું કે આસ પાસના કે ઘરના લોકો ભલે આપણું કહેવું ના માનતા હોય પણ આપણે આ વાતો કહેતા રહેવાનું અને પોતાને એ વ્યાસનોથી બચાવતા રહેવાનું.ત્યારપછી બાળકોને કહ્યું કે પોતાને યાદ હોય એવો કોઈ પ્રસંગ લખીને આપો.બાળકોને સમર કેમ્પમાં બતાવેલી ફિલ્મ્સ અને ચર્ચાઓ પણ યાદ છે એ જાણીને ખાતરી થઇ કે ફિલ્મ્સ સારી અસર તેમના દિમાગ ઉપર પડે છે.ઘણા બાળકોએ પોતે કરેલી નાની ભૂલો વિષે તથા નાના નાના સારા કામ કર્યા હતાતે પણ લખ્યું હતું.કોઈએ કોઈને છોડ તોડતા અટકાવ્યું હતું તો કોઈએ કોઈને રસ્તો ઓળંગવામાં મદદ કરી હતી.કોઈએ લખ્યું કે હવે હું ગાળ નહિ બોલું,તો કોઈએ લખ્યું કે હું પરીક્ષામાં ચોરી કરતો હતો પણ હવે નહિ કરું.આ બધી વાત થી એ સાબિત થાય છે કે બાળકોમાં સાચા ખોટાની સમજ છે હવે તે સમજનો યોગ્ય રીતે વિકાસ કરવાનો છે.

Ramilaben is working in Manav Sadhna as a librarian. She also works in Ghodiyaghar. She saw some children walking on the road and street without socks. Ramilaben felt that we should give socks to them. Therefore we collected rupees from Akshaypatr from students and gave it to Ramilaben. She was able to distribute socks and play with these children.

kite festival

On 13th January Manav Sadhna celebrated the kite festival with children in vangha stadium which is in the slum of Ramapir's tekro.Manav Sadhna distributed kites to all the children, who were very happy and had great fun flying them!

Film Screening in Ram Rahim tekro & Tuition class

On the Wednesday & Thursday in the Ram Rahim tekra and community center we a discussion session about the kite Festival.In that session we tried to explain and convince these children that Uttarayan festival is a fun festival, and that it shouldn't have been turned into a competition.why did it turn into a competition ? We also explained that the threads we use in Uttrayan are sharp as knifesand dangerous for birds and also for us.

The nature conservation foundation works on saving birds, especially in Uttarayan. many birds die in this festival so they want to spread awareness about making this festival safer we would all start to use simple threads, and about bird saving, that if/when we see an injured bird, explaining where we can bring it for treatment.

In the Sabarmati we have screened films of panchtantra and safaino sanedo and our audience was younger girls. After that we talked about girl’s education and personal hygiene. Among the 20 girls, only 3 girls are continuing their education and all the other girls are doing nothing.

So we are trying to have these girls come to the manav sadhna center to get non-formal education.

STORY:

Today I showed a film on pre-birth sex determination and after showing that film; I started discussing on the same with those women. They told me that they want only male-child as they would be able to continue and extend their families in future. So boys are more favored in their families. People also start taunting if a Girl-child is born.

To make them understand the value of a daughter in the family and also their equal position in the society, we asked them a question,” if your son can do everything and continue your family then why do you want him to get married and want a good bride for him?” Almost all the women present agreed but some of them argued that their families and in-laws don’t support them so they are helpless. At that time, Rekhabahen Rathod told us her story. She is working as a helper in an Aanganwadi no-64 in Satyakeval Nagar in Gandhivas for four years. When she was expecting her first child her in-laws refused to bear expenses of her medication. So she immediately left her in-laws’ house and now it has been 12 years, she is living with her daughter with all her dignity intact, all alone.

We also got to know a very touching story of a mother-in-law who has three grand-daughters. She told us that for her, son and daughter are same and always will be. One of the helpers told us that the youngest granddaughter was very sick before two months and had only 4% blood in her body. With the help of Aanganwadi helpers and constant care and support from grandmother, she has got 4% increase in her blood.

when i was singing RHYMES,they children were laughing a lot.when i asked them that why you all laughing?then they were giving me answer that teacher now we are not children steel why you teaching us the RHYMES? they children aware about them age but they have belief that now they are growing they they should not sing a RHYMES,that is not good thing of them mind so i was talk with them why i was teaching them RHYMES! children were very happy when they were dancing on the sanedo song.

then i was organized a competition about that film.in the competition between two teams. i make a rule.when i ask any question,i was giving them chance for answer who was clapped early than other team and get a point.they are smart.it was a nice experience because Harshaben's students were looking very neat and clean.They were cleaning them dishes and also room after taking snacks.

Purpose : બહેનો સાથે વાત કરતા ખબર પડી કે તેમને સ્તનપાન કરાવવામાં તકલીફ પડે છે અને ઘણી બહેનોનું પહેલું બાળક હોવાથી તેમને કોઈને એ વિષે પૂછવામાં સંકોચ થાય છે એટલે આજે સ્તનપાન વિષે ફિલ્મ બાતાવાયી.

Story :ગયા મંગળવારે આપણે તેમને શિશુ સંભાળ ની ફિલ્મ બતાવી હતી અને તેમની સાથે વાત કરવાથી ખબર પડી કે બહેનોને સ્તનપાન કરાવવામાં ઘણી તકલીફો પડે છે.

રૂપલબહેન અશોકભાઈ ઠકોર નામે એક બહેને હમણાં સપ્ટેમ્બર મહિના માં એક તંદુરસ્ત બાબા ને જન્મ આપ્યો છે ,

તે બાળકના જન્મના આશરે ૧૦ દિવસ પછી તે બાળક કમજોર થવા લાગ્યું અને તેને હોસ્પિટલ માં દાખલ કરવું પડ્યું. ડોક્ટરની તપાસના અંતે ખબર પડી કે તે બાળક ના પેટ માં એક ટીપું દૂધ પહોંચ્યું નથી એટલે તેની હાલત બગડી ગઈ હતી.તે બહેન શરમ અને સંકોચ ને કારણે કોઈને પોતાની તકલીફ કહી નહોતા શકતા એટલે એ બાળક ની હાલત બગડી હતી. અત્યારે ડોક્ટર ની સલાહ પ્રમાણે દવા લેવાથી તે બહેન સારી રીતે સ્તનપાન કરાવી સકે છે અને તે બાળકની હાલતમાં પણ સુધારો છે.

બહેનો બાળકો ને સ્વચ્છ કેવી રીતે રાખી શકે છે તે માટેની સખી દાદીની ફિલ્મ બતાવી.ત્યાં બાળક જન્મે એટલે તેને ગળથૂથી આપવામાં આવે છે જેને પરિણામે શિશુમાં ઘણા રોગ ફેલાય છે તો ગળથૂથી કેમ ના આપવી જોઈએ તે અંગે બહેનોને ફિલ્મ બતાવયી.

Stroy :બહેનો સાથે વાત કરતા જાણવા મળ્યું કે બહેનોમાં ડોક્ટર્સ પ્રત્યે પણ વિશ્વાસ નથી રહ્યો તેનું કારણ જણાવતા એક બહેને કહ્યું કે તેમને ગર્ભાવસ્થાના સાત મહિના સુધી કોઈ તકલીફ નહોતી પણ એકવાર ડોક્ટર પાસે તપાસ કરાવી ત્યારથી તેમને તકલીફો થવા લાગી છે અને એટલે તેમનું બાળક ગર્ભ માં ઊંધું તહી ગયું છે.

Lok Darsan video community

Video Community (Lok Darshan) : we have initiated a program, which enables the creation of Independent Video Units within local community itself. This would help community to create their own short films, video presentations and other media projects to generate awareness of various issues they are working towards. The process involves training filmmaking and media to a group of people from lower income group and making them video community producer so that they can go back and create video units and in return be self-employed. Awareness is also created by having regular film screenings in these communities and showing them films on health, sanitation and education.

Manav Sadhna 's trustee are Parents for all the slum children. they served food them with great love and spirituality.The Children were very Happy.With great satisfaction we celebrated that Batuk Bhojan!!!!

The children came to Manav Sadhna and prayed. The children were told about Shivratri. A group of 10-12 students from NID were welcomed. They came to help the children made arts and crafts out of newspapers. The NID students talked to the children about making these arts and crafts. The children were served by Naitikbhai of Seva Cafe—it was his birthday, so he distributed chocolate to the children. From the Manav Sadhna parivar, Seemaben’s grandmother served puri, shaak, khaman, shiro, and crisps, then the children went home.

TOUR OF KANKARIYA LAKE

Buses full of smiles, 120 children living at Ashramshala hostel were treated to an exciting outing at Kankaria Lake. Dressed to impress for the special occasion, the boys and girls patiently waited for their boat ride around the Lake. Laughing together and energized after their water adventure, they climbed out of the boats not expecting to see the next surprise that awaited them around the corner. The kids began jumping up and down at the sight of the choo choo train heading their way. One by one, they sang Gujarati tunes as they piled into the train carts. Looping around the lake, the kids scanned the surrounding scenery of colored lights, smelled the tasty nasto stands, and eagerly waved “bye!” to every passerby.

Thinking their fun was at its end, Manav Sadhna provided yet another treat—dinner followed by ice cream for dessert. Kids, staff, and volunteers all grabbed a seat at picnic benches to share the excitement of the night and share a full plate of food together. The night not only brought happiness to each child, but created a deeper sense of community amongst the entire group and made the staff feel just as young at heart.

Radhaben lives on the corner of the Prabodh Rawar Bridge in a house held up by two poles covered with a tarp. Gramshree’s own Chandrikaben found Radhaben and discovered that she was widowed at the young age of 21, and she was left with three children – a three year old daughter, a two year old daughter and a seven month old son. Her husband had died of cancer two months earlier. Helpless and without a proper source of income, Radhaben turned to begging as a means to support her family. Luckily, Chandrikaben found her and introduced her to Gramshree where she was able to apply some of her skills. She started work on a project where she created new crafts from recycled materials. To help Radhaben support herself and care for her children while she settled into her new work, Manav Sadhna gave her and her family 1100 rs. worth of food to last at least one month. Once a month she will also receive 10 kg of wheat as she is now also part of a program Manav Sadhna has set up to support widowed women. In addition, her two eldest children have been placed in one of the Manav Sadhna preschools. One month after her first encounter with Manav Sadhna, Radhaben has adjusted to her new job and is gaining the motivation and strength to sustain and support her family on her own.

Manjulaben – July 2009

One day, while doing field work in one of the poorer areas of Rampir Ne Tekro, we met Manjulaben and her family. She lives with her husband and two young daughters, and they earn a living by rake picking, picking up and sorting garbage. When we met her, Manjulaben hardly had enough clothes to cover her body, and there were a lot of flies hovering over the many foul-smelling, pus-filled sores located on her body. She had been taking medicine from the local medical store. She was sent to Civil Hospital and received treatment for eight days. During her stay in the hospital, her daughters had to be left with the neighbors because her husband had to work in order to be able to afford food to eat. Once Manjulaben returned from the hospital, she was required to take medicine and change the dressing everyday; however, the infection returned as the medicine was expensive and she could not afford to change the dressing daily.

She once again became very ill and was visited by a Manav Sadhna health worker. She was sent to the Manav Sadhna health center, and she was diagnosed with a very bad infection. The cost of one tablet and one injection was 108 rupees, and it was required that she take three tablets and two injections daily. Her one-and-a-half year old daughter was also diagnosed as anemic and malnourished as she had not been breast fed by her mother. Poonambhai, the doctor who oversees the health center, recognized that this family was very poor and yet very honest. He decided to give the dressing and medication to both mother and daughter for free. Since then, although it has not be cured, Manjulaben's infection has significantly reduced, and her treatment is ongoing. Her young daughter has been shown to a pediatrician, and follow-up is currently taking place. The baby is now put in daycare at the Manav Sadhna community center everyday.

Poor health is usually a result of lack of awareness and lack of treatment.Manav Sadhna tries to remedy this issue via programs geared towards hygiene,family planing,addiction and prevention and treatment of illness. All this carried out through our health center in the slum,regular medical camps and with aid from medical professionals and institutes.

Adopting Gujarat Harijan sevak sangh's historic hostel inside the Gandhi Ashram was also one of our first projects.We poured our hearts and savings into molding and improving the lives of 120 children from the Bhangi(scavengers) community.Children now live within the hostel and receive an education in a loving and caring environment.

As much as we would like,we still have a long way to go to eradicate child labor and return childhood back to the kids.Started many years ago,"Back to Childhood"was one of our first projects.Trough this project every Saturday evening,underprivileged children could enjoy their childhood again.For two hours,they gether to sing,dance,play and learn how to alleviate their hardships.The happy experience is culminated with a nutritious meal.

Dustbin project

Dust Bin ProjectThe project has 2 main objectives: 1) to remove dry household waste from the Tekra slums on a regular basis, and 2) to beautify the Tekra slums.Dust Bins / Stencils“Dust Bins” are essentially old containers of Ghee (cooking oil) that have been collected by Manav Sadhna staff and volunteers in the community center gym, and are subsequently re-painted. Manav Sadhna volunteers currently paint the outside of a bin green and the inside off-white (though the inside color is inconsequential). The thinking is that painting the inside of a bin will slow deterioration.We are also attempting to use iron stencils for the outside of the bins. Stencils are best when used in conjunction with spray paint.Highlights from yesterday: 9.11.09160 Dustbins were handed out.5 Rupees per dustbin was collected by Manav SadhnaCommunity members were told that pickup of trash would start this Wednesday 11.11.09 at 9amIf problems arise with pickup community members should alert Upendra or Rahoul at the Community Centerv Municipal Waste will be paying the 10 Rupee charge per month per family for all of the families receiving Dust Bins.

14 November Children's Day Celebration

The 14th of November is Jawaharlal Nehruji's birthday. Nehruji was the first prime minister of India after Independence. He wore a flower on his coat as a symbol of a child, blossoming in the world, bringing beauty, love, and innocence. He loved children and in remembrance of his birthday India celebrates Children's day.

Manav Sadhna held a Children's day celebration with 500 children from Ahmedabad. The celebration included prayer, live music, a dramatic play, and dance. There was also a yoga position dance to the Indian national song, Vande Mataram.
Earlier in the day the children enjoyed a puppet show depicting the lives of Indian royalty. Manav Sadhna volunteers served water and food to the children during and after the celebration and joined in the traditional garba dance. Hundreds of drawing books and color boxes were donated to Manav Sadhna to be given to the children as gifts after the celebration.
Several Trustees attended the celebration including Shri Ishwarbahi Patel, the founder of Manav Sadhna's father, and a leading activist for sanitation in India and founder of Environmental Sanitation Institute.
Underprivileged children enjoyed a day of excitement, entertainment, and education. Students from Mudra Communication performed two plays about cleanliness and education for girls. The band, Ananyamas, played several exciting songs for the children from well known Bollywood films.
Two children from Manav Sadhna's Earn to Learn program have been learning to play the guitar and performed at the celebration.
